In 1932, Robert Hunter Middleton drew Lafayette for Ludlow, following a fashion for extra condensed types for newspaper headlines that ran through American typography 120 years ago, a style that remains popular with conservative papers. Onno Schaap’s rendition of heavy verticals and horizontals lends authority, while the fine serifs add a delicacy without going to the nineteenth-century extreme of a condensed Latin.
