ITC Tapioca grew out of a logo designer Eric Stevens developed for a late-night, swinging nightclub. Yet the simple letterforms of Tapioca, with their whiff of childhood handwriting exercises, give it a youthful quality. This effect is enhanced by the typeface's rough edges, which make it look as though it's made up of strings of irregular beads-or of tapioca. The basic style is of "printed" handwriting, but it varies, with cursive forms in the g, e, and Q, and curlicues on the l, q, G, and J. The lowercase a and the number 2 both have characteristic top-heavy curves. The wildly varying slants of the letters, and their irregular size and alignment, give Tapioca the energy of serious play.
