ITC Octone is a condensed sans serif text face with a geometrical heart but a relaxed soul. French designer Eric de Berranger learned his passion for drawing letters from his professor of typography, Jean-Francois Porchez. De Berranger drew Octone, which he calls an incised lineal, between October 1996 and January 1997. "I wanted to make a sans serif that was less geometrical than the ones I knew," he says, "to give it a drawn aspect, made with the hand and not with the compass." The slightly swelling ends of the strokes in Octone are reminiscent of Adrian Frutiger's Icone or Hermann Zapf's Optima; they soften and humanize the rigid forms. The effect on the page is strong and plain, yet subtle. The Octone family includes small caps and old-style figures, in both regular and bold weights; the old style figures are especially stylish. The character set includes a full set of f-ligatures.
