ITC Mendoza Roman is a very personal statement on the part of its designer, Jos Mendoza. Though Mendoza is French, of a Spanish father and French mother, there is little Latin or southern European influence in his design. Rather, it suggests a northern European influence, almost of Dutch heritage. Mendoza says he "always tries to mix rigor with sensitivity, and the feeling of a hand's gesture" in his designs. ITC Mendoza Roman is classified as an oldstyle design, its stress is on an angle, stroke weight contrast is minimal, head serifs are banner shaped, and foot serifs have a slight cupping. Mendoza, who was an early assistant to French designer Roger Excoffon, started his own freelance business in 1957, and has designed type families for metal, photo and digital composition systems. He has also worked closely with France's prestigious Imprimerie Nationale Paris. ITC Mendoza Roman contains book, medium and bold weights with matching italics.
