ITC Home Improvement came together after designer Joe Pepitone visually took his house apart. Going from room to room in his house, he scrutinized appliances, opened doors, sat on chairs, and generally searched out inspiration for the 95 illustrations in ITC Home Improvement. The result is an assortment of everyday objects - a kitchen stove, a pair of garbage cans, an overstuffed chair - with a definite whimsical twist. Although the drawings have a 1950s sensibility, Pepitone also incorporated the bold angular influences of the art deco period and 19th century woodcuts. Creating the font affirmed Pepitone's affinity for drawing on the computer, which allowed him to more easily compose the sharp lines and precise angles of the typeface. Pepitone, a New Jersey native, began his career in the 1950s drawing pen and ink cartoons. For years he worked as a Connecticut-based account executive for typeface vendor PDR, where he developed a love of letterforms. Today he is an art director at Archie Comics.
