ITC Garamond font

Claude Garamond is generally credited with establishing the first type foundry - in France in the early 1500s. He was also the first to create typefaces, cut punches and then sell the metal type produced from the punches. Unfortunately, Garamond had little success. He died in 1561 owning little more than his punches. His influence, however, was widespread with almost all the major type foundries releasing versions of Garamond's original designs. In 1975, Tony Stan rephrased the famous Garamond flavor in late 20th century terms. His goal with ITC Garamond was to retain the classic beauty and spirit that typified Garamond, while enhancing the usability and legibility of the basic design. He introduced a larger x-height, while giving careful attention to the stroke weight transfer and weight gradations to ensure harmony and functionality. The results was a family of 16 designs that featured regular and condensed versions of light, book, bold and ultra weights, each with a matching italic.
