This contemporary adaptation - or "reinterpretation" - of Robert Granjon's 16th century design was drawn by Matthew Carter. A fan of Granjon, Carter originally drew the roman and black weights, and then used a computer to create the bold and ultra weights.
"The result was not a literal copy of any one of Granjon's faces, more a reinterpretation of his style," said Carter.
"The face was produced from scratch rather than working over enlarged photographs of punches or proofs." In ITC Galliard, Carter has captured the vitality of Granjon's work in a contemporary typeface that features contrasting stroke weight and a large x-height.
The typeface also features a distinctive and graceful italic design, serifs that are strong and full-bodied, and a strong calligraphic feel.
ITC Galliard is available in roman, bold, black and ultra weights, each with a matching italic.
