About Gloucester

Based on types from the Caslon Type Foundry, Gloucester Old Style derives from a design created by the distinguished American architect, Bertram Goodhue, in 1896. The objective of the design was to achieve maximum legibility by making the ascenders long while the descenders, which were considered of lesser importance, were made very short. Gloucester Old Style was a popular choice for text usage in the early 1900s. The expansion of the font family into various weight and width options has ensured its continued use in display and advertising work.
